Costing Green: A Comprehensive Cost Database and Budgeting
Methodology
By Lisa Fay Matthiessen and Peter Morris of Davis Langdon Adamson
(DLA)
This new report offers evidence that if there is any premium
associated with building green, it is far less significant than
a range of other factors that affect building cost. The paper
draws on DLA's extensive database of cost information for both
LEED and non-LEED projects. DLA specializes in cost estimating
and cost management in construction. In addition to looking at
the cost implications of pursuing each LEED point, the authors
provide a macro-level analysis of the cost of green projects.
Focusing on libraries, classrooms and laboratories, they compare
the cost per square foot of 45 LEED-seeking projects with 93 that
are not pursuing LEED certification. They found "no statistically
significant difference between the LEED population and the non-LEED
population." Matthiessen and Morris conclude that other factors
affect cost so much that any possible green premium is, in effect,
lost in the "noise" in relation to average cost per
square foot.

Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction
By Mark Maslin (2005)
Oxford University Press
This book looks at the history, politics and science of global
warming and shows that the issue can not be dealt with without
considering these different perspectives. It answers questions
such as why was all the basic global warming science available
by the late 1960s but the threat of global warming was not realised
until the late 1980s? In addition to tackling the actual science
involved, the book explains why current efforts to limit its impact,
such as the Kyoto Protocol, will probably fail, and examines the
moral and ethical implications that global warming present us
with.

"The Hidden Economics of Campus Sustainability"
by John P. Morris
From Facilities Manager, Volume 21, Number 3, May/June
2005
"Most of us are familiar with the obvious economic and environmental
benefits associated with utility cost avoidance programs...However,
some of the less obvious benefits of these efforts include the
avoidance of expensive utility plant investment fees; emission
equipment installations or upgrades, utility infrastructure upgrades;
maintenance savings; improvement in the quality of the indoor
environment; free publicity; and a recruiting tool."
