DESCRIPTION: "The Environmental Studies Program seeks
to enable students
to work toward a sustainable society and to improve the quality
of life on earth. Students learn the foundations of environmental
science and investigate the ethical, sociopolitical, cultural,
and economic aspects of environmental issues. Many students augment
their classroom work with internships, research and service learning
opportunities with a nearby town or one of the many strong non-governmental
organizations located near campus, or in public agencies. Others
study environmental topics abroad. Students also work at a field
station, at the Coastal Studies Center near campus, or at Cent
Island in Canada's Bay of Funny. This coordinate major program
and the environmental studies minor build upon core courses and
allow students substantial latitude to relate their study of the
environment to a disciplinary major."
