INSTITUTION: American University, School of International Service, and University for Peace (Costa Rica) DEGREE OFFERED: Dual degree in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (M.A.) DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time two year program in which students spend the first and last semester at American University, and the middle two semesters at the University of Peace in Costa Rica. This program "equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for managing eco-development issues in a global context and provides them with opportunities to establish ties that bridge the North-South divide." Students complete a research project in their last semester and participate in seminars. INSTITUTION: American University, School of International Service DEGREE OFFERED: Global Environmental Politics, International Development (M.A.) DESCRIPTION: Students in the Global Environmental Politics program take courses in global policy studies, environmental science, economics, international environmental politics, and environmental law to enable them to understand the processes of environmental degradation and protection. The program in "International Development provides a multidisciplinary overview of international development issues and policies that enables students to select and focus on a particular field of concentration." Students also complete original research as part of their degree. INSTITUTION: Portland State University, The Portland International Initiative for Leadership in Ecology, Culture and Learning (PIIECL) DEGREE OFFERED: Leadership in Ecology, Culture, and Learning (LECL) (M.A. or M.S.); Educational Leadership with an emphasis in sustainability education (Ed.D.) DESCRIPTION: Both degree programs are designed to allow students to develop and practice sustainability education. They define sustainability education as "an active process of teaching and learning in which we cultivate knowledge, skills, feelings, values, and worldviews adhering to the principles of ecology and we redesign our livelihoods (social, economic, political and educational systems) accordingly." They are designed for educators and educational leaders involved in multicultural, ecological, and/or social justice work. The Ed.D. program is stated to still be in development as an advancement of the masters degree (although students can come from many backgrounds.)
